Please read the information below carefully before proceeding to the online application form.

Application Checklist

  • Determine which program is suitable for your educational background
  • Determine that you are eligible for, and that you can meet the requirements/expectations of the Gateway or Advanced program
  • Decide which projects within the Gateway or Advanced Program best suit your interests and background
  • Read about how to Choose a Recommender and the Steps in Requesting a Recommendation
  • Read how to Choose an Mentor/Advisor who will provide on-campus advice during the project (can be same as recommender)
  • Prepare the information required for the online application form (see below)
  • Submit a completed application before the 15 February deadline
  • Provide your recommender and mentor/advisor with copies of your application materials and transcript
  • Send your recommender and mentor/advisor this link to the online faculty recommendation and advisor form: https://keckgeology.org/faculty/
  • Check with your recommender and mentor/advisor to ensure that they submit their information by 22 February

Online Application Form Requirements

The complete online application requires the following information:

  • Name
  • College Information
  • Overall GPA
  • Past Coursework and Grades
  • Anticipated Coursework and/or Field Camps before the Keck REU project starts
  • On-campus Mentor/Advisor name and email (may be the same person as your recommender)
  • Faculty Recommender’s name and email
  • Essays responding to the following prompts:

Essay for All Applicants:

  1. The Keck Geology Consortium is dedicated to enhancing the diversity of future scientific communities and sharing our science with a broader audience. Please describe how you, based on your personal background and life experiences (including social, cultural, familial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges) will contribute to this mission during and after participation in a Keck research project.

Essays for Gateway Project Applicants:

  1. Describe your personal goals for participating in this summer research REU program.
  2. How would participation in this summer REU research program help you meet your academic and career goals as you currently envision them?
  3. What strengths (academic and non-academic) would you bring to a Keck Geology project that will contribute to its success?

Essays for Advanced Project Applicants:

  1. Describe your academic, career, and personal goals and how participating in a Keck Geology REU program will help you meet those goals.
  2. Describe the areas of research in the geosciences that interest you most and indicate your preference for working in office, lab, or field settings.
  3. What strengths (academic and non-academic) would you bring to a Keck Geology project that will contribute to its success?

Application Deadline:

The application period closes February 15, 2024 at 23:59:59 Central Standard Time; the completed application must be received by this date. The Faculty Recommendation and On-Campus Mentor/Advisor Acknowledgements are due by February 22, 2024.
