Keck Geology Consortium Mission and Goals

Mission

The Keck Geology Consortium seeks to attract, diversify, retain, and develop undergraduate students in the earth sciences by providing exceptional field and laboratory experiences that involve students in all aspects of the research process.

Goals

The Keck Geology Consortium offers undergraduate research experiences that include a collaborative summer field project, campus-based academic-year laboratory studies with close advising, and a consortium capstone symposium that includes the production of a publication-quality short paper and poster presentation.  The goals of these experiences are to help students:

  • improve their understanding of the earth through solving complex, real-world problems using multi-disciplinary approaches
  • develop skills needed by professionals in the earth sciences, including field and laboratory techniques, data collection and interpretation, working with information resources and computers, collaboration, managing ambiguity, and written and oral communication through collaborative and mentored research experiences
  • develop their confidence and identity as scientists through greater understanding of the intellectual and practical work of science
  • refine their career plans and prepare them for graduate study
