F. Questions (all applicants must answer these questions)
Please respond to the following three questions.
G. Mongolia Questions
If you are applying for the Mongolia Project please respond to the following questions.
On many days, we may be hiking off-trail to reach field localities. Some projects may require field work in somewhat steep terrain. We may also be working and camping under variable conditions, from hot and dry one day to cold and raining the next. July and August are the wettest months of the year in northern Mongolia. What experience, through work or recreation, do you have in these conditions, and what will you do to be in shape for such an adventure?
Safety will be our highest priority. We will have a satellite phone but will be working in remote areas at least a couple of hours from the closest medical clinic. Though it is not required, we hope to have several students with first aid training. What first aid training have you had, and how recently?
Please note that no special diets can be accommodated - apart from preparation of simple vegetarian and meat-based meals (We will employ Mongolian cooks who prepare Mongolian fare that will consist of plenty of sheep, goat, and the occasional fish). Please discuss if this will present any problems for you.
The success of this project will depend on everyone being willing to make contributions, large and small, to the group as a whole. Individuals may occasionally need to make compromises so that the group can function as well as possible. What experience do you have being part of a group, and what will you do to help keep spirits high during long days of travel and while working on projects in the field?
This project involves close collaboration with Mongolian students in the field and an opportunity to become familiar with Mongolian culture in camp and while traveling across the country. Students who value this interaction and who will enthusiastically join their Mongolian peers in field work, camp chores, and camp fun are preferred. Please discuss your interest in interacting with people of different cultures.
